Readings for August 30 – September 5

School is back in session for most families this week, which means mornings look different than they did a month ago. Different routines, different amount of time, different amount of energy left over by evening.

The reading doesn’t need to compete with any of that. It’s small enough to fit into whatever the new routine ends up looking like, whether that’s first thing in the morning or whenever things finally settle down at night.

This week also closes out August and crosses into September. Proverbs finishes its cycle on the 31st and starts back at chapter 1. Same chapters, different read, same as always when that happens. Ezekiel keeps moving forward through the rest of the week.

Readings for August 23–29

Ezekiel picks up the pace this week. Four straight sections, all from the same book, all moving in order.

That kind of consistency can actually make a week easier. There’s no jumping between books, no adjusting to a different style halfway through. You’re in one place, and you stay there for a few days before moving on.

Worth noting heading into the end of the month, some schedules are starting to shift around as summer winds down. If this week feels a little busier than the last one, that’s probably why. The readings stay the same size either way.

Readings for August 2 – August 8

The dog days of summer.

Hot, slow, the kind of weeks where not much feels urgent and it’s easy to let things drift.

That’s actually fine for this.

The readings don’t require energy or a clear head or a good morning. They just require sitting down for a few minutes.

On the days when motivation is low and the heat is high and nothing sounds appealing, twenty minutes of quiet reading is about as low a bar as it gets.

If you’ve been consistent, keep going. If you drifted a little over the summer, this is a good week to get back in it.

Readings for July 26 – August 1

Isaiah wraps up this week and Jeremiah starts.

Proverbs also resets on August 1, so if you’ve been reading since earlier in the year you’ll notice the chapters cycling back around.

That’s by design.

Same ground, different read.

One thing that’s easy to forget after a few months of doing this is how short the actual reading is. It starts to feel routine, which is good, but routine can also make it easy to keep pushing it to later in the day until it doesn’t happen.

The days with passages are twenty minutes. The Proverbs-only days are five.

Neither one requires much.

It just requires doing it.

Readings for July 19 – July 25

Halfway through July.

If you started this in January, you’ve been at it for about seven months, which puts you further along than most people who said they were going to read the Bible this year.

That’s not something to make a big deal out of.

It’s just worth noting that consistency compounds quietly.

You don’t notice it week to week, but it adds up. Seven months of steady reading is a different thing than where you were in January, even if it doesn’t feel dramatic.

Keep the same structure going this week.

Still summer.

If you’ve been consistent, you’re well into a rhythm by now. If you’ve been spotty, this week is as good a place as any to get back on track.

The readings on the heavier days take about twenty minutes.

Most people who put it off end up spending more time thinking about whether to do it than it would have taken to just read it.

That’s not a knock. It’s just how it works.

The decision is harder than the reading.

Pick it up and keep going.

This week ends on the 250th birthday of the country, which means a lot of people are going to have full schedules this weekend.

Barbecues, travel, family, all of it.

Worth getting the readings done early in the week if you can.

This week finishes Job and moves into Ecclesiastes. The next book is technically Proverbs, but since we read that daily, we’ll skip over it in the order.

Readings For June 14-20

This week you finish Nehemiah, read through all of Esther, and start Job.

That’s a wider range than it might look like on paper. Nehemiah ends with some administrative detail and a dedication of the walls. Esther is something different. It reads like a short story, one of the more narrative books in the Bible. Clear characters, a plot that moves, a beginning and an end. You could finish the whole thing in one sitting if you wanted. Most people don’t, but it’s there.

Job starts at the end of the week. The opening sets up something that’s going to take a while. Don’t try to resolve it yet. Just read what’s there.

School’s Out for the Kids (But Not for You)

School just ended about a week ago.

That means later mornings, pool days, camps, vacations, and a different kind of schedule for a while.

It’s great for the kids.

You still keep reading.

The good thing is there are only four weekly readings again this week, so even if the routine shifts around a little it shouldn’t be hard to stay on track.

That’s part of why I like keeping the structure simple.

You don’t need some elaborate system. You just need to keep putting the next chapter in front of yourself often enough that it stays part of your life.

Summer tends to expose routines.

Some disappear completely the second life gets busy or more fun.

Some survive because they were never that complicated to begin with.
