  • It Takes Longer to Explain Than to Send

It Takes Longer to Explain Than to Send

If you’ve ever tried to bring up Bible reading in conversation, you know how clunky it can get. You start qualifying things, explaining what you mean, making sure it doesn’t come off the wrong way.

That’s a lot of effort for something simple.

Forwarding a link skips all of it. No setup, no explanation, no risk of the conversation going somewhere you didn’t intend. You just send it.

The person on the other end can look at it whenever they want, on their own time, without you having to manage how the conversation goes. That’s a lower bar than trying to explain why you think they should read the Bible more.

Just send this page, they can check it out and sign up below if they like.

  • The Calendar Isn’t Doing Anything For You

The Calendar Isn’t Doing Anything For You

January 1 doesn’t have any actual power. It’s a date like any other, and the only reason it feels significant is that everyone agreed to treat it that way.

A lot of people wait for it anyway, as if starting on a specific day will make the habit stick better than starting today would. It won’t. The date isn’t what makes something last. Repetition is what makes something last, and repetition can start on any day of the year.

Most New Year’s resolutions fail within a few weeks, not because people picked the wrong date but because the date was never the variable that mattered. The habit itself either works or it doesn’t, independent of when it began.

If you’ve been waiting for some symbolic moment to start reading, you can stop waiting. There isn’t one coming that’s any better than today.

You just start with this week’s readings and keep going from there.

  • Readings for August 9–15

    Readings for August 9–15

You’re deep into Jeremiah by now, well past the point where it still feels new. That’s actually a decent place to be.

A long book stops feeling long once you’re far enough into it. The names and places that seemed unfamiliar a few weeks ago start to feel like part of the landscape instead of something you have to work to follow. This week keeps moving through that same stretch, four more sections further in.

Nothing about the pace changes. You just keep reading where you are.

  • What If I Don’t Understand It?

What If I Don’t Understand It?

Some passages are going to confuse you. That’s not a sign you’re doing something wrong.

A lot of the Bible was written for people in a different time, with different assumptions about how the world worked, dealing with situations that don’t map cleanly onto anything you’re dealing with now. Some of it is going to land strangely on a first read. Some of it might never fully click, and that’s fine too.

The instinct is to stop and try to resolve it before moving on. Look something up, find an explanation, figure out what it means before reading the next chapter. That instinct isn’t wrong, but it’s also not necessary here.

You can read something, not understand it, and keep going. The next chapter doesn’t require you to have solved the last one.

Understanding usually builds slowly anyway. A passage that confused you in March might make more sense by August, not because you researched it but because you’ve read more of the surrounding text by then. Context accumulates. You don’t always notice it happening.

So if something doesn’t make sense, that’s allowed. Keep reading.

  • Nobody Asked What You Think

    Nobody Asked What You Think

Most religious content online is built around reaction.

Someone reads a passage, then tells you what to think about it. A take, a thread, a sermon clip, a devotional. The actual text becomes a launching point for somebody else’s opinion, and the opinion is usually the part that gets remembered.

    That’s not what’s happening here.

There’s no reaction to the text on this site. No framing before you read it, no wrap-up after. Just the reading itself, the same words that have been sitting there for a long time before anyone built a platform around explaining them.

You might read something and have no strong reaction at all. That’s fine. Not every passage needs to produce an insight. Sometimes you’re just logging the hours, building familiarity that pays off later when something connects that wouldn’t have otherwise.

Nobody’s waiting to hear what you took from it. There’s no comment section here. You can sit with the text and not have an opinion ready, which is rarer than it should be.

  • Readings for August 2 – August 8

    Readings for August 2 – August 8

    The dog days of summer.

Hot, slow, the kind of weeks where not much feels urgent and it’s easy to let things drift.

    That’s actually fine for this.

The readings don’t require energy or a clear head or a good morning. They just require sitting down for a few minutes.

On the days when motivation is low and the heat is high and nothing sounds appealing, twenty minutes of quiet reading is about as low a bar as it gets.

If you’ve been consistent, keep going. If you drifted a little over the summer, this is a good week to get back in it.

The schedule is still moving and you can rejoin it right here.

  • You’re Not Vouching for Anything

    You’re Not Vouching for Anything

Recommending most things comes with some risk. You suggest a diet, a productivity app, a book that changed how you think, and if it doesn’t land the same way for the other person, that’s on you a little.

    This is different.

There’s nothing to oversell here. No promise about what it’ll do for someone, no outcome you’re putting your name behind. It’s just a structure for reading the Bible. Either it’s useful to someone or it isn’t, and that has nothing to do with you.

That makes it an easy thing to pass along. You’re not telling someone this will change their life. You’re just handing them a plan that’s worked for you, with no expectation attached.

If it fits, they’ll use it. If it doesn’t, nothing was lost by mentioning it.

Just send them this page from your phone, they can sign up below if they like it:

  • Behind Compared to What?

    Behind Compared to What?

People say they’re behind on their Bible reading, but behind compared to what exactly?

There’s no other reader to measure against. No version of you that did it perfectly this year that you’re now trailing. The only thing “behind” could mean here is behind some imaginary schedule where nothing ever interrupts you, and that schedule never existed for anyone.

Real weeks have sick kids, late nights, trips, days that fall apart for no good reason. A plan that assumes none of that happens isn’t a realistic plan. It’s a trap that makes you feel like you failed at something nobody could have actually done.

This one doesn’t work that way. There’s nothing to be behind on, because there’s no finish line you’re racing toward. You’re not behind. You’re just wherever you are, and the next chapter is right there waiting whenever you pick it back up.

Stop comparing yourself to a version of the year that doesn’t exist. Just read today’s chapters.

  • Readings for July 26 – August 1

    Readings for July 26 – August 1

Isaiah wraps up this week and Jeremiah starts.

Proverbs also resets on August 1, so if you’ve been reading since earlier in the year you’ll notice the chapters cycling back around.

    That’s by design.

    Same ground, different read.

One thing that’s easy to forget after a few months of doing this is how short the actual reading is. It starts to feel routine, which is good, but routine can also make it easy to keep pushing it to later in the day until it doesn’t happen.

The days with passages are twenty minutes. The Proverbs-only days are five.

    Neither one requires much.

    It just requires doing it.

  • Digital vs Print

    Digital vs Print

It doesn’t matter which one you use.

Some people like having an actual Bible in hand. Turning pages, writing in margins, the weight of it. Others read on a phone or tablet because it’s already in their pocket and there’s nothing else to carry around.

Both work fine for this. The plan doesn’t care what format you’re reading in, and neither do I.

If you’re inclined toward print, a basic copy works. You don’t need a study Bible loaded with notes and cross-references, since the point here is reading the text without anything stacked on top of it. If digital is easier, any Bible app with the right translation will do the job.

The one advantage digital has is convenience. If your phone is already with you most of the day, the reading is too. That removes one more excuse for skipping it.

The one advantage print has is fewer distractions. No notifications, nothing else open in another tab.

Pick whichever one you’ll actually use. That’s the only criteria that matters.
